GC2 Peak Generating Techniques

Zoex Europe

A second dimension in GC analysis enables total flexibility to experiment to generate peaks by different means, compared to one-dimensional GC analysis.

Heart-Cutting is the most commonly recognized technique in GCxGC, in which a section of eluted sample from column 1 (non-polar) is cut and transferred to the smaller length of a second dimension column (usually polar), and then resolved.

Reverse Back flush After all fast eluting species have eluted, the column flow is reversed and the late-eluting less volatile components are quickly eluted. The reverse back flush technique shortens the total run time compared to conventional GC using just a single GC column - and enhances its lifetime.

Enriched Sample Concentration
By pre-concentrating trace components using a packed column as the first column, more sample can be loaded, compared to that of a capillary column. Using the heart-cutting technique described above, trace components can be selected and transferred to a capillary column for analysis.
